Blerim Dzemaili explained what happened when he hit the upright in the last moments of Switzerland’s defeat to Argentina.

A goal would’ve forced extra time in this World Cup Round of 16 tie, but the Napoli midfielder nodded on to the upright from six yards and the rebound ricocheted off his knee.

“I was unlucky on that chance, as I didn’t see the ball until the last moment and then the ricochet didn’t go my way,” Dzemaili told Sky Sport Italia after a 1-0 loss.

“It’s horrible going out like this, but we played a great game and cannot have asked for any more from ourselves.

“We go out with our heads held high, but this is a young squad and we’ll grow with the coming years.

“The same is true of our striker, who next time won’t feel his legs shake in front of the goalkeeper.”

This appeared to be a reference to Josip Drmic, who lobbed harmlessly into Sergio Romero’s hands when one-on-one in the first half.

“Argentina? At the end of the day, the big teams win their games.”
