Italy’s Minister of Education has defended Gianluigi Donnarumma from criticism but urged the Milan goalkeeper to complete his high-school diploma.

Donnarumma was accused of “showing a serious lack of respect” to the Italian education system after he failed to take his graduation exam, but Valeria Fedeli insists no-one can judge the 18-year-old for his decision.

“Dear Gigio, a lot of the Italian Press has talked about you,” she began in an open letter to Gazzetta dello Sport.

“Not only for your contract with Milan, for which I give you my best wishes, but also – and above all – your decision not to take your graduation exam.

“’He was right, who needs piece of paper in a country like Italy of today?’

“’He was irresponsible, he’s a public figure and he should consider being a role model for so many young people.’ These are more or less the comments.

“You’ll surely have weighed up your decision and it’s not for others to judge it.

“But, I want to say it openly, I hope you decide to complete your training path and take your exam next year, without hesitation and with conviction.

“Show, like they’ve already done and other champions are doing, that legs and head can go together, that high-level sports and study aren’t incompatible.

“Indeed, they have a lot in common: both require commitment, consistency, passion and hard work. You would be a precious example for all those young people. They dream of becoming like you.

“Studying is an extraordinary opportunity for growth. It’s the instrument that, more than anything else, can give us autonomy, independence and critical thinking, which can make us aware and active citizens.

“Only knowledge creates true freedom, it allows each and every one to find their own voice, their own way.

“For those who practice high-level sports, studying may sometimes become a hurdle. I understand.

“But for this reason, after years of demands from the sports world, the Ministry of Education has started a didactic scheme, which meets the needs of students that are also athletes.

“I’m sure, Gigio, that you, too, will be part of this team [of graduates] next year. You’re a step away from the finish line. Don’t give up.”
