Gianluigi Donnarumma insists Italy “are on the right track” and renewed his duel with Piotr Zielinski after a 1-1 draw with Poland.

The Nations League opener in Bologna saw Donnarumma perform a great save on Zielinski, but could do nothing on the goal, while Federico Chiesa earned a penalty converted by Jorginho to equalise.

“I did tell Zielinski after the game that he can’t keep scoring past me…” the Milan goalkeeper told Rai Sport, having conceded a brace from the Napoli midfielder a fortnight ago.

“We need to improve our passing and not make so many mistakes. We gave the ball away too cheaply, we’ll work on that in training and now try to put in a great performance against Portugal.

“We did well to get back into the game here and that wasn’t easy. At times we struggle a little when under pressure, but must remain united and not misplace these passes.

“It’ll take a little patience, but we are on the right track.”

Italy take on Portugal in Lisbon on Monday evening.
