Gigio Donnarumma was heavily criticised by French paper L’Equipe following PSG’s 1-0 loss to Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday, but Italian media were not so harsh on the Azzurri captain.

Donnarumma’s PSG were eliminated from the Champions League semifinals by Borussia Dortmund, losing 2-0 on aggregate. A Mats Hummels goal allowed the Bundesliga giants to secure a 1-0 victory in Paris last night, and French paper L’Equipe blamed Donnarumma for Borussia’s winner.

Gigio was rated 4/10, and L’Equipe argued that the ex-Milan star should have gotten out on the corner, resulting in Borussia’s winner.

Italian newspapers didn’t share the same view as Corriere dello Sport rated Donnarumma 6.5, more than any other teammate, while Gazzetta rated him 6/10, the highest in the PSG squad alongside ex-Napoli midfielder Fabian Ruiz and Bradley Barcola.

However, the pink paper also noted that, despite a key save on Karim Adeyemi in the first half, Donnarumma rarely claimed the ball from corner kicks, so it was easier for Hummels to score the winner for Borussia Dortmund in Paris.

  1. haha. The macarons trying to scapegoat the Italian for yet another expensive failure. First half save kept PSG in the game. It certainly wasn’t Gigio in attack hitting the post and bar six times.

  2. Exactly Rosario, Gigio kept them in the game. The fact that PSG couldn’t score over both games wasn’t up to the keeper.
