Gianluigi Donnarumma called Wednesday’s Milan Derby “practically a Champions League play-off” between Milan and Inter.

The Derby delle Madonnina was called off last month following the tragic death of Fiorentina captain Davide Astori, but will now be played on Wednesday at 17.30 UK time (16.30 GMT).

At the time, Inter were in crisis and the Rossoneri perhaps the form team in Serie A, but yesterday the Nerazzurri celebrated a third straight win with clean sheet and Milan fell 3-1 at Juventus.

“We are disappointed with that result, but we fought Juve on level terms until the final minutes,” Donnarumma told Milan TV.

“We take home a great performance, but not a result, despite the many scoring opportunities. They won it on a physical level, not a technical one, punishing us in a situation where we should’ve done better.

“Now we look forward to what is effectively a Champions League play-off with Inter. I hope there is a great deal of enthusiasm at San Siro. We’ll give our all and need our fans to win the game.”

Mauro Icardi has also found his form again with six goals in his last two games and famously bagged a hat-trick in Inter’s 3-2 victory over Milan earlier this season.

“We’ll see how it goes, he’s an incredible striker, certainly one of the best,” continued the goalkeeper. “I hope that I win the battle between us.”
