Roberto Donadoni reveals he “probably could have been Italy CT” if he’d wanted the job.

The Bologna Coach was linked with a return to the Azzurri bench, as Antonio Conte is leaving to join Chelsea after Euro 2016.

Giampiero Ventura was later confirmed as Conte’s replacement, but the man who was in charge between 2006 and 2008 believes he could have had the job.

“There’s not much point talking about it now,” Donadoni shrugged, speaking to Quotidiano Sport.

“I probably could have been the future Azzurri CT if I’d wanted, but I made other choices.”

Donadoni’s final match in his first spell on the Italy bench was a defeat to Spain at Euro 2008, and Conte’s side face La Roja on Monday.

“Spain remain a team with supreme quality, but I’m convinced that the Azzurri can cause problems. We have huge motivation, and we must transform the pitch into a test of courage.

“It would be a mistake to go into the game with the fear of being dominated by our opponents. We shouldn’t be timid, we should be aware that if we put our qualities out on the pitch we can affect the game as much as them.

“I like the spirit this Italy has, the way they approach matches. They’ve been a team so far, even when they’ve been suffering.

“The match against Sweden was emblematic of that, and the goalscorer was emblematic of the whole Azzurri: Eder.

“He was suffering right up until the point that he scored, but he found the strength to decide the game.”
