La Gazzetta dello Sport reports Professor Giorgio Galanti, a former Fiorentina sports consultant and the ex-director of the centre for sports medicine of the Careggi hospital in Florence, has been sentenced to one year in jail.

Galanti was the last medic to sign off on the certificate of fitness to play professional sport on July 10, 2017.

Prosecutor Antonio Nastasi had requested a sentence of one year and a half, Galanti was under investigation for culpable homicide.

The sentence is suspended, so the doctor won’t go to jail.

“The ruling should have been different,” Galanti’s lawyer Sigfrido Fenyes said, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“We are anxious to read the motivations, the Italian justice has three degrees and we’ll lodge an appeal.

“I informed my client about the sentence and he is shocked. This decision leaves a bitter taste in our mouth, now we’ll be working for the appeal.”
