“I went back to how we played last season, with a 4-3-3, and realised we were able to spread the play better. I am pleased that all the goals were well-worked team moves co-ordinated with Berardi’s movement,” he told Sky Sport Italia.
Berardi is only 19 years old, but netted all four goals in a stunning 4-3 victory.
“He is a player who can make the difference. I gave him his debut and he is ideal for the 4-3-3, as he brings quality and hard work. He knew this was a very important match and gave what he needed to.”
It is a particularly important win that takes Sassuolo out of the relegation zone and essentially saves Di Francesco’s job.
“With the way the team plays, the Coach has something to do with that, otherwise I just get blamed for the problems and receive no credit for the good performances.
“This is the first time the team has gone into Serie A, we have quality and are playing against sides with huge revenue.
“Milan owed me… At Lecce we had done something extraordinary to go 3-0 up and lost 4-3, but this time it was the other way round. We knew Milan have been good at fighting back from trailing situations this season and they hit us with everything they had at the end.
“I like to underline that my team played and created goals of truly great quality. This side has been able to change in moments of difficulties, which means the squad is open to what the Coach wants. I always trained with 4-3-3 just in case, but my vision of football is about passing lines that I can’t really get with other systems.
“We certainly concede too many goals and are too open, so the midfielders must work on helping to cover the defence, but I enjoy myself more with beautiful football.
“I am infinitely grateful to the players, as every time they were called upon to put in a great performance, they were up to the task.”
