Eusebio Di Francesco rues missed opportunities and defensive errors after Sassuolo fell 3-1 at Genk in the Europa League.

“It’s a shame, as we were in the game and at times had the initiative, but we weren’t sharp enough in the final third and Genk were. That’s what made the difference,” the Coach told Sky Sport Italia.

“Obviously when you go 2-0 down after 25 minutes, you run a few more risks and I put an extra striker on, so that leaves you open to the counter-attack.

“I don’t like to talk about the referees, but when it was 2-0 at the 50th minute we were denied a clear penalty. He gave the free kick, but you could see it was inside the box. A goal at that stage might’ve led to a very different game.”

The Neroverdi suffered their first European defeat, but made the trip to Belgium without eight injured first team players.

“I had very few players available and didn’t want to throw youngsters in on their debuts in this situation. I knew Genk were strong on the counter, the real problem was conceding the two early goals that were totally avoidable.

“There were odd situations, as some defenders slipped and others weren’t focused enough, so the two goals could’ve been avoided.

“We are going to return home very late and unfortunately have a very limited squad right now, so I don’t have many choices to make. I don’t like to complain and I won’t, we just have to draw out all our remaining energy and give our best against Milan on Sunday.”
