This has been a chaotic campaign for the Flying Donkeys, as they started from -3 points due to financial irregularities, fired Lorenzo D’Anna after two points from eight rounds, then Giampiero Ventura abruptly quit with one draw from four matches.

“A new era begins, so whatever happened in the past no longer matters,” said Di Carlo in his Press conference.

“We want to resume from the Chievo spirit, the sense of belonging, determination and passion that characterised this club from the start.

“The last couple of weeks over the international break allowed us to rediscover that spirit, following in the example of Sergio Pellissier.”

Striker Pellissier has been at the Stadio Bentegodi since 2000, going through their iconic first ever Serie A season through to a Champions League play-off, relegation and promotion.

Now Chievo are up against Carlo Ancelotti’s Napoli, who must win to maintain their advantage over Inter and keep the gap with leaders Juventus at six points.

“We have to face this great team with no fear, focusing only on ourselves and our own characteristics,” continued Di Carlo.

“Being in a packed stadium with passionate fans should be extra motivation for us.”

Fabrizio Cacciatore is back in the squad along with Filip Djordjevic, but Nicola Rigoni, Manuel Pucciarelli, Emanuele Giaccherini, Nenad Tomovic and Pawel Jaroszynski are injured.

Curiously, over the last 48 hours both teammates Cacciatore and Jaroszynski became fathers, so there was an air of celebration and renewal in the Chievo camp.

Chievo squad for Napoli: Seculin, Semper, Sorrentino; Bani, Cesar, Tanasijevic, Barba, Depaoli, Cacciatore, Rossettini; Birsa, Kiyine, Burruchaga, Obi, Hetemaj, Radovanovic; Djordjevic, Meggiorini, Grubac, Pellissier, Leris, Stepinski
