Caretaker Italy CT Luigi Di Biagio assures there’s “total harmony” with Gianluigi Buffon, who will make his own decision about the March friendlies.

The goalkeeper appeared to have waved farewell to international football after the play-off defeat to Sweden which saw the Azzurri miss out on the World Cup.

However, the interim Coach has made it clear he’d like the Juventus captain to play in this month’s friendlies with Argentina and England, with some reports that Buffon was irritated by his words.

“Buffon and I are in total harmony, we speak often,” Di Biagio told RAI, in an interview which will be broadcast in full tomorrow night.

“He wanted to take a few days to reflect and we’ll talk again next week. In the end I’ll take the decision on whether to call him up, but I have to understand what he wants to do.

“Reading other things doesn’t bother me, because everyone has their job to do, but these [rumours] aren’t real considerations.

“I talked with Gigi this morning and we agree on everything, because at the centre of everything is the good of the national team.

“This isn’t doing a favour to Gigi. I’d like him to be with us, because I need him on the pitch, but he doesn’t have to play for any reason, even off the pitch ones.”
