France are only the fifth reigning champions to reach the next World Cup Final, but Didier Deschamps could equal a record achieved only by Italy legend Vittorio Pozzo in the 1930s.

Les Bleus beat Morocco 2-0 this evening to book their place in Sunday’s Final against Argentina, where there will be plenty of Serie A talent on show.

They lifted the trophy in Russia in 2018 and traditionally it is very difficult for a team to defend their World Cup title.

In fact, the last sides to reach the next Final were Brazil in 1994 and 1998, while Argentina did it in 1986 and 1990, both losing the second time.

Only twice in history has a country managed to successfully defend their World Champion status, namely Brazil in 1958 and 1962, plus Italy in 1934 and 1938.

However, only one coach has ever taken his team to two consecutive World Cup titles and that was Italy’s Vittorio Pozzo in the 1930s.

Deschamps was also in charge of France in 2018, so a victory would allow him to equal Pozzo’s so far utterly unique record.

Meanwhile, goalkeeper Hugo Lloris could become the first captain ever to lift the World Cup for two tournaments in succession.

  1. 1. This was the only match I’ve watched in this World Cup. So impressed with Morocco who deserved so much more. They really played some fantastic football. Absolute credit to themselves.
    2. Theo tackle on boufal was a stonewall penalty. I have no idea how it wasn’t even reviewed.

This is Messi’s World Cup final. It’s written in the stars. Pozzo can sleep easy.

  2. I hate both teams.
Argentina cost us the world cup in 1990 and France the Euro in 2000.
I hope neither team wins and they go on and on with penalties. They must suffer.
