Alessandro Del Piero wrote a heartfelt farewell to Giorgio Chiellini following the announcement that he’ll be leaving Juventus in the summer.

The 37-year-old Italian defender announced after the Coppa Italia final defeat to Inter that he’d be leaving the Turin club after 17 years this summer. It was an emotional evening for Bianconeri fans, even if the writing had been on the wall for some time now. Chiellini now has to decide whether he wants to continue his playing career in the MLS or retire to a director’s role with Juventus.

Writing on his Instagram page, Del Piero wished Chiellini well and thanked him for his long service to the club.

“You’ve shown what it means to wear the Juventus shirt, every time you’ve taken to the pitch. For 17 long years. I’ve seen you come along as a boy, and win it all with humility and hard work. An example for anyone who dreams of these colours.

“As a Juventus fan and a teammate, from Serie B to the Scudetto, thank you Giorgio!

“Now enjoy the last one at the Stadium because it’s sure to be special.”

Chiellini joined Juventus in the summer of 2005 in a deal worth around €7.7m from Fiorentina. In his 17 years with the club, the Italian centre back has made 559 appearances across all competitions, scoring 36 goals, providing 25 assists and winning a long list of honours, including nine Scudetti.
