Roberto De Zerbi had a nightmare debut in the Champions League with Shakhtar Donetsk, as FC Sheriff Tiraspol won 2-0. ‘We were unlucky in every respect’.

The former Sassuolo coach, who moved to the Ukrainian giants ahead of the new campaign, saw his men suffer a surprising defeat in the first round of the competition against the team from Moldova.

“In football, defeat can happen,” De Zerbi told the club’s official website. “We were unlucky in every respect, while Sheriff were lucky.

“Unfortunately, it happened, it was our fault. Many of my players didn’t play their best game. We have to work hard and always try to do better.”

Shakhtar Donetsk are thus bottom in Group D of the Champions League, where Inter lost 1-0 to Real Madrid on Wednesday.

  1. If you cannot take advantage of having 20 efforts on goal (to 11) and 17 corners to 5, and cannot defend, you’re not unlucky, you’re just not good enough on the day. It was the same story with Inter.

  2. Inter’s story was different, it was a game of two halves….. inter was the better team at first half but Madrid were far better at second half

  3. @Pedro The fact is Inter lost the game. Even if Inter were better in the first half, they had nothing to show for it. You have to take your chances when you’re on top. If you don’t, you have no one to blame but yourself. Thankfully for Inter this was just one game. If they continue with this approach, they will do well. I doubt they’ll be as wasteful as the likes of Atalanta who always create numerous chances, miss them and then get punished because they cannot defend.
