Lazio defender Stefan De Vrij announces he’ll start training with the ball next week.

The Dutch international has missed most of the season after having surgery to correct a recurring knee problem, but is now nearing a return.

The Dutch international has missed most of the season after having surgery to correct a recurring knee problem, but is now nearing a return.

“At the beginning of this season, I had a lot of ups and downs, so at the end of October we decided that the best solution would be surgery,” De Vrij recalled in an interview with 9024 Sports.

“The surgery they did was called microfracture, they made holes in my bone so the blood would come out and make it strong to support the function of the cartilage.

“I had to stay at home most of the time, doing my exercises on the couch, and after that I started to go to the gym to start my recovery.

“Next week I will start my training with the ball on the pitch again. I’m pleased to say that my knee is doing really well, up until now I haven’t felt any pain, it feels good.

“I feel very supported by the club, I have a lot of contact with the people there, and every now and then I go to Rome to visit them.

“I feel I’m getting stronger every week, and that my movement is getting much better than the week before and I’m almost ready to go to the pitch and make the next step."
