Roma goalkeeper Morgan De Sanctis has described the throwing of a banana at his former Sevilla teammate Dani Alves as ‘ignorance.’
The incident occurred during yesterday’s La Liga match between Villareal and Barcelona and the veteran shot-stopper says it is up to sport to put an end to discrimination.
“I was watching the match and I saw the incident involving Dani Alves,” De Sanctis told the media.
“Among other things he is my former Sevilla teammate. I soon regretted what I saw.
“It was a form of racism but at the heart of it was a lot of ignorance.
“Our goal in sport is to look to eliminate all forms of discrimination.
“There are many different types and all of them need to be fought. Only by doing that can we hope to improve things.”
