The 39-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season, but reiterated his desire to keep playing in an interview with LaRoma24, despite a lack of playing time.

“I also dealt with this discussion last year,” De Sanctis noted.

“When you sign a contract with a big club like Roma you sign it as a goalkeeper. It doesn’t say in the contract if you’ll be the starting goalkeeper or the reserve, whether you’ll play 50 games or five.

“When you’re a goalkeeper for Roma you have to make yourself available to train well and offer as much as you can to the Coach, who will then make his choices.

“Compared to the first two seasons this has been the one where I’ve seen less of the pitch, because first [Rudi] Garcia and then [Luciano] Spalletti decided [Wojciech] Szczesny should start.

“From this point of view I think the club has appreciated my behaviour, taking into account the words of Garcia, Spalletti and most recently [President James] Pallotta.

“It’s something I just do naturally, because in my long career I’ve been the second or third goalkeeper, and I’ve always fought against players in the dressing room who behave one way when they’re starters and another when they play less.

“It’s a natural thing, common sense, that you make yourself available to your teammates.

“I’ve given my availability to the club to continue as a player, because I’ve had positive feelings throughout the whole season.

“I’ve trained well, I’ve had no particular physical problems so I still feel competitive. The physical and athletic tests tell me that.

“We’ll evaluate things, there’s no problem. My goal is to keep playing, and if that’s at Roma I’ll be even happier.”
