“The doctors were clear immediately, and they warned me that recovery was impossible,” De Rossi explained to Corriere della Sera.

“I tried all the same, I didn’t want to just give up like that. The day before I trained with my teammates, but I was crippled compared to the others.

“[Antonio] Conte was right not to let me play.

“I tried to stay in the match [against Spain] but by half-time I was suggesting to Thiago Motta that he warm-up.”
