Italy have announced that Daniele De Rossi will miss Monday’s first 2018 World Cup qualifier against Israel due to a calf problem.

De Rossi was replaced by Daniele Rugani at half-time in Bari, and the FIGC has confirmed in a subsequent statement that the midfielder will return to Roma for treatment after suffering a “strong contusive trauma” in his left calf.

“Daniele De Rossi has left the national team’s retreat and will therefore not be available for Monday’s game against Israel in Haifa,” it read.

“The Roma midfielder came off prematurely yesterday evening in the friendly against France because of a strong contusive trauma in his left calf.

“He was subjected to instrumental examinations in the late morning at the Regional Hospital of Miulli, accompanied by national-team doctor Enrico Castellacci.

“The findings highlighted an inability to recover in time for the match against Israel, and in the coming hours the player will return to his club for specialised medical treatment.

“In Haifa, there will be neither be Leonardo Bonucci, who was unable to answer the call for family reasons.”
