And the 29-year-old has claimed that he doesn't enjoy the talking that is done off the pitch in the capital.

“When I come to the national team I am considered an important player,” he told La Repubblica.

“But in Rome I have to be careful how I move and what I say.

“There have been some shameful slanders directed towards me.

“There are a lot of lies in Rome.

“I do not know where they come from, but I have learnt to live with it.

“It's more than the lack of European competition that bothers me. There have been some crazy rumours in the past, but you have to deny them.

“I'm not saying this affects my performance – you have to be clear-headed.

“I reject the notion that I play well for the national team and not for Roma, I prepare for both equally well.”
