Daniele De Rossi celebrated his 36th birthday today and will mark the occasion by getting on a plane to Buenos Aires for Boca Juniors.

According to Il Romanista, De Rossi and wife Sarah Felberbaum left their home this evening and got into a taxi taking them to Fiumicino Airport.

They’re expected to fly to Buenos Aires on flight AZ680, taking off at 21.45 local time (20.45 in the UK).

He was waved off at the airport by fans and media, but spoke only briefly as he walked into the restricted areas.

"It's all a bit chaotic with luggage and the flight, but yes, it's emotional."

When Roma refused to offer him a new contract, he had been approached by other Serie A sides, above all Fiorentina and Sampdoria, but was not prepared to play for another Italian club.

He was convinced by the lifelong dream of playing for Boca at the Bombonera, holding negotiations with director of sport and his former Roma teammate Nicolas Andre Burdisso.
