Daniele De Rossi has admitted that he perhaps should have left Roma and Italian football earlier in his career.

The midfielder has previously been linked with a number of clubs abroad including Manchester United, but has remained with the Giallorossi through his career.

However, in talking with La Repubblica, the Italy international has conceded that he was perhaps wrong to stay in the capital.

“Aged 31, what do I think now? That at aged 20 I would have had to have left Italy, to experience life and football abroad,” De Rossi has commented in the interview released today.

“I would have played more in the Champions League and perhaps in more finals. It would have expanded my boundaries and professionally.

“But I have just never been there. I have always had lunch with mum and dad, who live three minutes away from me. I was very pampered, very much a son.

“It is difficult to change a comfortable bed, more than it is easy to adjust. It is almost impossible to leave Roma. The fans love you, follow you, if you fall, they wait for your return.”
