Daniele De Rossi has apologised to his Roma teammates and fans after conceding a penalty and receiving a red card in the 1-1 draw at Genoa.

Having taken the lead through Stephan El Shaarawy, the Giallorossi dropped two valuable points after De Rossi firstly pulled Gianluca Lapadula’s shirt, then slapped him in the face while a Grifone corner was being taken.

Upon VAR review, midfielder De Rossi was shown a straight red card, with a spot-kick awarded to the home side.

Lapadula converted it and Roma were unable to force a winner.

“The penalty incident? That is why I came here,” De Rossi said after the match at Marassi.

“There isn’t much to say. I tried to block Lapadula. The pictures aren’t very good.

“I ask everyone for forgiveness, I am very sorry. We go again.”
