Napoli President Aurelio De Laurentiis says Carlo Tavecchio’s resignation is “a chance to rebuild” the FIGC.

The Federation President announced earlier today that he’s stepping down, after Italy failed to qualify for the 2018 World Cup.

“Did I ask for Tavecchio to resign? It’s not like that,” De Laurentiis told reporters, as quoted by TuttoNapoli.

“It just seemed to me that the problem wasn’t only the fact that Italy didn’t qualify for the World Cup.

“I’m very disappointed for Tavecchio, but the Federation is good for Serie B, Serie C, and not the top division.

“So I think this is a chance not so much to get rid of someone, but to rebuild in a way that’s never been done, always starting from the leagues.

“We need a permanent body that studies and modernises football as the world changes, because it’s been changing for so long.

“I don’t know who the right replacement would be, I’m just saying that in my opinion the Federation doesn’t seem to care about Serie A anymore. I don’t want to be tied to the Federation.”

Former FIGC President Franco Carraro has been touted for a return…

“He’s already been the President of the FIGC and he’s a very experienced man, but it’s not for me to judge.

“We need to understand who has the numbers to institutionally transform this Federation, and I think he’d do well.

“People ask for new faces, but who are they talking about?”
