Frank de Boer saw “Inter started to play as a team and we deserved the victory” in the Derby d’Italia against Juventus.

Frank de Boer saw “Inter started to play as a team and we deserved the victory” in the Derby d’Italia against Juventus.

Stephan Lichtsteiner had opened the scoring before Mauro Icardi nodded in and then set up the winner for Ivan Perisic.

“Juventus of course are a team who give you extra motivation, but we discussed things in the locker room, that we had to play as a team from the first to the 90th minute,” De Boer told Sky Sport Italia.

“That’s something we didn’t do on Thursday (in a 2-0 defeat to Hapoel Beer-Sheva), but we did tonight and that is why we deserved the victory.

“I am happy with what everyone is doing right now, we fought the whole game and clearly we can improve, but we have now started to play as a team and with that the added quality can then make the difference.

“We talked a lot about this, as we already went behind and lost our heads three or four times, for example against Chievo and Pescara. It’s even worse if you are against Juve.

“However, this time we remained concentrated and did not stray from our approach, so that really paid off. This is what I want to see from my team.”

Perisic was originally expected to be out injured, but he came on in the final stages and scored the winning goal.

“He didn’t train for a few days, but I knew he could contribute coming off the bench and he did. I have many players to choose from.”

After this victory, Inter’s second Serie A success in a row, can they become Scudetto contenders?

“It’s always nice after victories like this against the best side in Italy to think of such matters, but the most important thing is to prepare for Empoli. It’s a very long journey, I am happy with tonight’s performance and we have to show it every week that we can play as a team, otherwise Empoli or other sides will get the better of us.

“This win is a great moment for the fans, the club and the team, as victory over Juve will start to build confidence,” continued De Boer.

“We studied Juventus and realised (Leonardo) Bonucci is very good at starting moves from the back, so (Gary) Medel above all tried to close him down, press the ball and (Antonio) Candreva did it too on (Giorgio) Chiellini.

“It was a fine performance from the whole team and that’s how it works, the whole side has to move in a homogenous and compact way, but we need to do it every week.”
