The Dutch Coach barely lasted two months in the San Siro hotseat before being replaced by Stefano Pioli.

However, in an interview with Gazzetta Dello Sport, the former Inter midfielder expressed his belief that De Boer could have been the right man for the job.

“If they had given him the chance [he could have succeeded]," Sneijder told the Italian daily. "Frank did well at Ajax, he did very well as the national team assistant. In 2010 he helped us a lot.

“The truth is that the Inter of Moratti is finished. I am sorry that he left, so everything is finished.”

Sneijder, now at Galatasaray, then questioned the lack of leadership in the current Inter hierarchy.

“They need someone who can command, someone who is respected and someone who everyone listens to.

“Right now the players do not have references. The Chinese owners? Who are they? Who sees them? Where are they? I am sure that even the players don’t know them.”

Finally, the 32-year-old was asked about how Derbies in Turkey compare to the Derby Della Madonnina.

“They are full of passion, very intense. But the Milan Derby is something else.

“Those Derbies [in my era] counted for something. Whoever won the Derby won the League. Now Juve always win.”
