The deal with Lazio had seemingly been done last week, but the days dragged on amid reports he wasn’t taking their calls.

Valencia were mentioned as potential candidates, along with Napoli and Juventus, but in a shock move this evening, Real Sociedad announced David Silva had signed a contract with them until June 2022.

The 34-year-old had been offered a three-year contract worth €4m per season, Champions League football and perks including use of a private jet to visit his family.

However, it seems as if the call of home was too great and he wanted a return to Spain.
