“We pushed harder in the second half. Beforehand everyone acted as if a win was to be taken for granted, but modern football isn’t like that,” Darmian told Rai Sport.

“Malta put everyone behind the ball and it wasn’t easy, but we changed gear after the break and it was clear to see. We could’ve won by a lot more goals.

“Now we have the result and must prepare with the same concentration for the next game with Bulgaria on Sunday.”

This was Darmian’s first appearance for Italy since moving to England for Manchester United.

“When we are called up for our clubs, we must work hard to prove ourselves and earn a place for Italy. It’s always an honour to be here.”

Darmian was asked to give the Italy team a vote out of 10 for their performance.

“Well, six for the victory and the rest… I don’t know.”
