The Italy full-back has become frustrated by a lack of regular game time under Old Trafford boss Jose Mourinho.

And after Portuguese Mourinho revealed the former Torino man had expressed a desire to leave earlier in the week, the 28-year-old himself admitted his intention to depart.

"I want to play more regularly. Last season, I didn't play much, that's my objective and my ambition," Darmian began.

"That's why I spoke with the manager and also with the club about my future. I want to leave but we will see what happens because we don't know."

Darmian has been linked with a transfer to Inter and Juventus this summer and has now indicated a preference to return to his homeland.

“It's an option. Yes, probably,” he responded when asked whether he would like to join an Italian club.

"We will see what happens. Honestly, I'm waiting.

“If I stay, I stay and I do what I did up until now. If I go, it is because the offer that another team makes will be good."
