Danilo admits Juventus ‘got it wrong’ in their 4-2 defeat to Sassuolo, but rushed to reassure Wojciech Szczesny after howlers. ‘We are a team.’

The Bianconeri had been unbeaten and confident of keeping up with Serie A leaders Inter, but found themselves leaving the Mapei Stadium empty-handed.

There were numerous howlers, two of them from Szczesny on Armand Laurienté strikes, then Federico Gatti scored a comical own goal into an empty net when he didn’t realise the goalkeeper had left his post.

“A night like this needs to be a teachable moment,” Danilo told DAZN.

“We know there is a long season ahead, that we were not champions before and we are not terrible now. We just have to keep improving day after day.”

Speaking to the media afterwards, Allegri said that he had sensed some warning signs in training over the last few days that the Juve players were not fully focused on this match.

Considering they did not have any midweek European commitments to worry about, in theory they ought to be more concentrated and fired up.

“We certainly got it wrong in terms of mentality, we are a young team and must help the younger players to mature with more leadership. We have players who are able to be leaders and we need to encourage them.”

Even some of the more experienced figures in the squad were struggling today, as Szczesny twice flapped at Laurienté efforts, leading to two Sassuolo goals.

Danilo was spotted running over to reassure the goalkeeper after the opening howler.

“We are a team. Everyone can make a mistake, today it was Szczesny, but on the 3-2 goal I was the one keeping their striker onside. On nights like this, we need to be even closer together. It is the only way we can improve.”
