Brentford have increased their offer for Mikkel Damsgaard, so Sampdoria look set to accept for the player who thought his career was over only a few months ago.

According to Sky Sport Italia transfer pundit Gianluca Di Marzio, the initial €11m plus €7m in add-ons proposal was rejected, but Brentford have improved that to reach €20m.

Samp are inclined to accept the offer and it remains to be seen if the 22-year-old Denmark international will be able to agree personal terms.

Damsgaard joined Sampdoria from Nordsjaelland in 2020 for €6.75m and is currently under contract until June 2024.

He barely played last season, making 11 Serie A appearances before being ruled out in October 2021 with what at first seemed to be a thigh injury, then knee surgery.

The midfielder did not return to the field until April 2022 and confessed this summer his entire career had been put in jeopardy.

“It was a very aggressive form of arthritis. There was no improvement, it felt like it was never going to heal, but thanks to the collaboration between Italian and Danish rheumatologists, a new therapy was designed and gave an excellent response.

“It’s nice to be back. It’s difficult to explain, but I’ve been sick, in the hospital. It’s been tough, but I’ve gotten over it, I got the right medicine, I am working hard to play again, because I want to do what I love and that’s playing football.”

  1. Didn’t know this but wondered why I hadn’t seen him play , half expected Inter to sign him before Miki came…. Good luck Daams!

  2. Another example of why athletes get paid big salaries. Even in the best of circumstances, they’d have been lucky to have careers spanning 10-15. But an injury or mishap is always a realistic possibility. One moment the kid is impressing at the Euro, and next he is even questioning whether he will play football again.

  3. Bees have a good track record of recruiting players who’ve had serious injuries and getting them back on track. If we can do that with Damsgaard we’ll have a great player who i expect to see in a CM/CAM role for us
