Croatia apologised to Italy after a swastika was mowed into the pitch. “It’s shameful for the whole country.”

The design was visible from the stands and groundsmen rushed to cover it up at half-time, but the damage had been done.

To make matters worse, this Euro 2016 qualifier was played behind closed doors in Split because of racist chanting in a previous match with Norway.

“What happened is shameful not just for Croatian football, but for the whole country,” Federation spokesman Tomislav Bacek told Ansa.
