There are serious doubts as to whether Sunday’s Euro 2016 qualifier against Croatia will go ahead, as San Siro’s pitch was so badly flooded that both teams had to cancel today’s planned training sessions.
“If the turf remains in these conditions, then I don’t think the game can go ahead,” Croatia Coach Niko Kovac told reporters.
“It would be like a game of water polo. The ball simply does not bounce. It will have to be called off if the pitch doesn’t improve.”
That is not the only problem, as Italy are also due to play Albania in a friendly in Genoa’s Stadio Luigi Ferraris on Tuesday evening.
Ironically, the game was organised in order to raise funds for those affected by devastating floods in the city last month.
However, it might not go ahead at all because more torrential rain has again filled the streets with water and mud.
The local authorities in Genoa ordered people not to leave their houses on Saturday, as the Stura and Cerusa rivers burst their banks.
Albania had been due to fly in this morning from France, where they played a 1-1 friendly draw with Les Bleus on Friday, but their flight was delayed by the weather.
