The 2008 UEFA Cup winners have been scouting Italy regularly in recent months ahead of the transfer window reopening in January.

Zenit have already been linked with Novara striker Pablo Gonzalez, who has scored 11 goals for the runaway Serie B leaders this season.

However, La Gazzetta understands Luciano Spalletti has told the club's directors that Criscito is a key target for Zenit's upcoming campaign in the Premier League.

An inquiry had already reportedly been made, but it remains to be seen whether the 23-year-old Italy international is open to Zenit's offer.

Criscito is very tied to Genoa, although the Italian contingent in St Petersburg, which is made up of Alessandro Rosina and Spalletti, could well make the prospect enticing.
