Zenit defender Domenico Criscito admits he is “very flattered by Milan’s interest” and could return to Italy.

The versatile player can act as left-back or central defender and was surprisingly left out of the Italy squad for the World Cup.

“Is it the moment to come back to Italy? I don’t know, but I am certainly very flattered by Milan’s interest,” he told Tuttomercatoweb.

Criscito has been in Russia since 2011, but his contract is due to expire in 2015.

“I don’t know what Zenit’s position is, as you’d need to ask my agent what the club thinks. What I do know is that they consider me an important player.”

He was publicly furious with Cesare Prandelli for not even including him in the long-list for the World Cup, but insists playing in Serie A wouldn’t have made any difference.

“Up until the World Cup, injuries aside, I had always been part of the Nazionale, so I think a return to the Azzurri depends entirely on my performances and not where I am playing.”
