Zenit’s Domenico Criscito says he ‘wasn’t expecting an Italy call-up’ and that Roma 'could be an option.'

The defender was a target of Inter’s recently and he revealed that a deal fell through due to Zenit wanting to keep him.

Roma are now believed to be interested, with former Zenit boss Luciano Spalletti now in charge in the capital.

“Return to Italy? First I’d like to know if I’m important for the new Zenit Coach Mircea Lucescu,” Criscito told Tuttomercatoweb Radio.

“It was a positive season, we won the Supercup and Russian Cup. It’s a shame about the league and the Champions League.

“I honestly expected not to be called up to the Italy squad, I’ve not been a part of the group under Conte for the last two years.

“I would’ve liked to be a part of the national team and I hope to be able to in the next couple of years.

“I don’t know if I was punished for being in the Russian league. I’ve had five years of playing in the Champions League and this year we did really well.

“Have I spoken with Conte? No, I’ve had no contact.

“Inter deal? Zenit deemed me as important, so they refused the offer. There was contact with Mancini but the deal didn’t materialise because my club wanted to keep me.

“I tried to convince Zenit and I miss Italy, I’d like to go back as it’s my country.

“Roma? It could be an option but at the moment neither me nor my agent have had any contact.

“I know Spalletti and with his drive and experience he’s done a great job.”
