Hernan Crespo insists Argentina could play Juventus’ Gonzalo Higuain and Inter captain Mauro Icardi at the same time – “all great players can do it”.

The Albiceleste repeatedly ignored the Nerazzurri man before Jorge Sampaoli took over, and he has overlooked Pipita for recent squads.

“It’s been a long time since I saw a penalty box striker like Icardi,” Crespo, who scored 35 goals in 64 games for Argentina, told RMC Sport.

“Football was changing and the traditional striker was disappearing in favour of the false-nine – Icardi brought that role back from the past.

“Higuain should also be praised though, he’s a number 9 who plays for the team, he gets involved in the play and relies less on crosses.

“Could they play together for Argentina? Yes, all great players can do it. But they have to be added to [Lionel] Messi, [Paulo] Dybala, [Angel] Di Maria and so on.

“They can’t all play, as people in Argentina would like.

“The difference between us and Italy is Lionel Messi, who dragged his national team to the World Cup.”

Crespo was also asked if he’d have preferred to play for Maurizio Sarri’s Napoli or Max Allegri’s Juventus.

“That’s one to ask Higuain! For a striker playing with Sarri would definitely be a lot of fun.

“But for a player it’s also important to know you have a strong club like the Bianconeri behind you, that’s something that all the other teams are missing.

“If they’re level it’ll become very difficult for the Azzurri to triumph in May: the Bianconeri have a different mentality.”
