The idea was proposed by FIGC President Gabriele Gravina in the aftermath of Serie A being suspended until April due to the Coronavirus.

Gravina proposed a solution where the top four teams in the league at present – Juventus, Lazio, Inter and Atalanta – go into a play off for the Scudetto.

The same concept was also proposed to decide who would get relegated to Serie B, with Genoa, Brescia, Lecce and SPAL all facing the drop.

Gravina’s idea is supported by Billy Costacurta, who spoke to Sky Sport Italia about the issue.

“We must be decision-makers. Not assigning the title isn’t right, the playoffs and play-outs could be the best solution in this emergency situation,” said Costacurta.

“This finale would make the end of the season exciting. I love the table and the championship, but this is an emergency and you could experience new emotions.”

Any sort of one-off match, or tiebreaker, hasn’t been seen in Serie A since the 2004-05 season. On that occasion, Parma and Bologna battled it out in a two-legged play-out tie to avoid relegation.

Parma eventually won 2-1 on aggregate, relegating the Rossoblu.
