There were another 604 deaths, taking the total fatalities to 17,127, but Italy have turned a corner in the COVID-19 pandemic with 258 leaving hospital and 106 new intensive care unit beds available.

These statistics confirm that Italy has reached the peak of the pandemic and the figures are slowly dropping day by day.

There were just 3,039 new cases of the virus since Monday evening, but combined with those released from hospital and the dropping death rate, it means only 880 more are positive now than yesterday. That’s the lowest increase since mid-March.

The 604 deaths in 24 hours has in these extreme times come to represent a low figure.

Treatment is also increasingly effective, with 106 intensive care unit beds being freed up over the last 24 hours.

There are now 24,392 people who have recovered from the illness and been released from hospital, 258 since yesterday.

As things stand, 94,067 are currently positive for coronavirus, with 61,557 in self-isolation (an increase of 145), 28,718 in hospital (+35) of which 3,792 are in intensive care (a drop of 106).

This is also because the curve is being flattened, as when too many cases are flooding into hospitals at once, it becomes much more difficult to treat each of them effectively.

Italy has been stepping up testing intensively over the last week, completing 33,713 in just the last 24 hours.

The country has performed 755,455 tests for coronavirus, with 135,586 of those coming back positive.
