“This was an important day for me,” said Corini, who seemed to shed a tear at the final whistle of this 2-1 result.
“I returned to a city that gave me so much. I feel the responsibility of helping Chievo, but this victory was important for the team’s confidence. In my view we deserved the win.”
Sampdoria were angry at the 87th-minute strike, as Chievo continued playing with Pedro Obiang down injured.
“The rules state that it is the referee who must stop play in these situations. He didn’t have a head injury, so we simply continued playing.
“In Europe there are fewer interruptions for this sort of thing and we have to adapt to these parameters.
“We need courage, as if you don’t counter-attack in Serie A then you get pegged back and go nowhere. I like this courage and I’m glad my team put into practice some of the concepts we tried out in training.”
