Sampdoria completed the comeback from an early goal to win 3-1 away to Crotone, with new buy Gonzalo Maroni immediately on target.

The Blucerchiati will face Cagliari in the Fourth Round of the Coppa Italia in December.

It was Crotone who took the surprise lead just eight minutes in when a long ball over the top allowed Salvatore Molina to spring the offside trap, chest it down and beat Emil Audero.

Fabio Quagliarella’s acrobatic attempt whistled wide, as did an Ahmad Benali free header from Molina’s cross.

Audero kept the scoreline down with his gloves stung by Junior Messias as the defence again was sliced open.

It was the Crotone offside trap that failed for the equaliser, Gianluca Caprari running on to a long cross-field pass from the back, controlling well and firing into the far bottom corner.

Moments later, Moreno Rutten clumsily bundled into the back of Nicola Murru for a penalty, which Quagliarella converted powerfully to turn the game around.

Jakub Jankto should’ve made it 3-1, but blasted wide, then Murru was very fortunate not to give away a penalty for handball on Rothen’s cross on the stroke of half-time.

Crotone remained dangerous, Andrea Barberis flashing a free kick across the face of goal with nobody able to get the final touch.

Audero was called into saves on Rutten and Nicola Nanni, as it turned into a siege on the Samp defence. However, totally against the run of play, the Blucerchiati extended their lead with substitute Gonzalo Maroni. He’d been on the pitch for 30 seconds when nodding in a cross from the right.

Maroni’s dream night did not end the way he wanted, as the Argentine was stretchered off in agony after a coming together with Messias saw his ankle turn badly. It was quite swollen and he was taken to hospital for tests.
