The early Federico Dimarco goal proved enough for Inter to eliminate Juventus from the Coppa Italia semi-final and give them the chance to retain their trophy.

The first leg ended 1-1 in Turin, so with no away goals rule, any draw here would push it to extra time, the winner going on to face Fiorentina or Cremonese on May 24. That tie ended in chaos, including red cards for Romelu Lukaku, Juan Cuadrado and Samir Handanovic, but the Belgian was pardoned because his gesture silencing the crowd was aimed at racist fans. Dusan Vlahovic and Moise Kean were injured, so Federico Chiesa was used as a False 9.

There was a huge chance for the hosts in the opening three minutes, Lautaro Martinez unmarked only grazing his head to a NicolĂČ Barella ball flashed across the six-yard box.

Alex Sandro prevented Denzel Dumfries nodding in at the back post from a corner flicked on by Alessandro Bastoni, and Inter took the lead at their third attempt.

Barella was again involved, a through ball off the outside of the boot perhaps meant for Edin Dzeko, but instead finding Federico Dimarco to scuff into the far bottom corner from 12 yards.

Lautaro Martinez drilled just wide after Manuel Locatelli lost the ball under pressure and fired over on the half-volley, while Mattia De Sciglio nodded Alex Sandro’s cross past the upright.

Andre Onana made his first save on 34 minutes, his gloves stung by a sudden long-range Filip Kostic strike, but it remained mainly Inter with Lautaro Martinez’s angled drive testing Mattia Perin.

Juventus had no attacking threat at all, so introduced Arkadiusz Milik and Locatelli drilled straight at Onana, then Edin Dzeko had the ball in the net after a wonderful dummy on Gleison Bremer, but it was futile because of the offside flag.

Dumfries sprinted away down the right and rolled across, but once again Lautaro Martinez just failed to connect with the low cross for what would’ve been a tap-in.

Perin kept Juve in it with a great reaction save on Henrikh Mkhitaryan from eight yards, after Dimarco’s free kick had ricocheted into his path off the wall.

Onana smothered an Angel Di Maria effort from the edge of the box, Milik risked an own goal nodding a free kick onto the roof of the net and Onana rushed out to stop Chiesa pouncing on a deflected Milik assist.
