The Rossoneri have been beset by problems this season, yet remain only three points adrift of Atalanta in that fourth spot.

“The mood is positive, as despite a negative spell, we always believed in our chances. Unfortunately, it no longer just depends on us,” Conti told Sport Mediaset.

“In any case, we are convinced that we can do it and on Saturday will go to Florence looking for three points. Our confidence was certainly hit by the defeat in the derby, that’s clear for all to see, but the victory over Bologna raised our morale and we hope to get back to playing the way we did two months ago.”

Conti’s former Atalanta teammates are now in fourth place and the Coppa Italia Final, but he has no regrets.

“I’m not in the same shape I was before the injury and I’d love to give more, but I know it’ll take time. It does make me suffer, because I know that I’m not the player people have seen recently. I know I can do more and that’s what hurts the most.

“I committed myself to this project and I want to stay here, with or without Champions League qualification. It makes no difference to me, as I feel at home here, I feel loved and if it was up to me, I’d stay here for life.

“I know it’s not just up to me, but I am happy and want to show what I can do. If we don’t make it into the Champions League, we’ll have many regrets, because we know we’ve wasted so many opportunities.”

There was tension in the Milan camp on Monday during the 2-1 win over Bologna, as Tiemoue Bakayoko warmed up too slowly and ended up in a blazing row with Coach Gennaro Gattuso.

“He apologised and the whole thing was over as soon as the game ended,” assured Conti. “It’s a pity that Baka has been the subject of so much criticism in recent weeks, because he’s a good lad and doesn’t deserve all this negative attention. We are all with him, we are all united, there’s no problem.”
