Antonio Conte confirms he is missing some things about Serie A and the Italian way of football, which should be adopted to change the ‘bad habit’ of Tottenham Hotspur and other Premier League sides.

The former Juventus, Inter and Italy boss was speaking at a press conference when he expressed irritation at the English way of doing certain things, above all with regards to the discussion of transfer strategy and financial aspects.

“In England I think there’s a bad habit that it’s only the coach talks and explains,” said Conte.

“I’ve never seen the medical department coming here to explain. It’s the same I’ve never seen the club or the sporting director coming here to explain the strategy of the club.

“In Italy, before every game there’s a person from the club that goes to speak to the media. I think for us it could be really really better, otherwise there is only one face to explain the situation that I think is better for the club to explain. It’s habit and I respect this habit. In Italy it’s different.”

Conte certainly has a point, as in Italy the pre-match television interviews tend to be more with a director of sport or CEO rather than the coach, who instead usually gives his views after the final whistle.

However, it is also fair to say that generally in Italian football the transfer strategy is more in the hands of the club, whereas in the Premier League a manager has greater say over what players are bought and sold.

Some might suggest Conte is trying to distance himself from the club’s own approach in this case, as he has repeatedly hinted since arriving at Spurs that he wanted more reinforcements available to him.

  1. That’s because whilst England has adopted the idea of having sporting directors etc, the general notion is that the ‘coach’ is a manager. The manager in England is usually supposed to be responsible for everything inclusive of strategy and player purchase/sale, whilst in Italy, the coach’s only focus is to act on the strategy of the club, and make a team of the players provided to him.

  2. Vince

Yes, especially as he left inter because players were sold against his wishes! Does he want full responsibility or not?
