The choice has been criticized because of the player’s poor performances since moving to Liverpool, with Conte even having to answer questions on whether sponsors had a say in his call-up.
However, the Coach has received the backing and explanation of his President.
“Conte told me that he wants to test Balotelli because he doesn’t know him,” FIGC chief Tavecchio explained after the Lega Nazionale Dilettanti elections today.
“I think that Conte has managed to bring back some enthusiasm, giving youth a chance – people have agreed over his choices.
“Now we await a major opponent in Croatia.”
