Italian coach Antonio Conte hit back at Jurgen Klopp’s criticism of Tottenham Hotspur’s negative style of football, insisting the Liverpool manager was ‘looking for excuses.’

The controversy erupted after their Premier League draw at Anfield, which had seen Spurs take the lead before a deflected equaliser.

Klopp complained in his post-match interview that he does not “like this kind of football. They play a world-class team, they sit back.”

The German later apologised, while Conte gave his response in a press conference this afternoon.

“For sure if there was a team that deserved to win, it was Tottenham not Liverpool. In this game, I think Klopp understood he gained one point not lost two points,” said the Italian.

“Jurgen is intelligent, he was a bit frustrated after the game. At the same time, for us, for a top coach, it’s important to be focused on your team, not your opponents. To be focused on your opponents, means you want to find an excuse or alibi because it means something in your job was wrong.”
