Italian tacticians seem to be effective against Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool, as after Inter won in the Champions League, Antonio Conte’s Tottenham ended a 12-match winning streak at Anfield.

The Reds had won every Premier League game on home turf since October 2021, a run of 12 consecutive victories, until this evening’s 1-1 stalemate.

Spurs had taken the lead through Son Heung-Min’s goal, before a deflected Luis Diaz effort snatched a point to keep their Premier League title hopes alive in the battle with Manchester City.

Conte is the second Italian coach to upset the Anfield crowd, as Simone Inzaghi’s Inter won 1-0 here in the second leg of the Champions League Round of 16 on March 8.

Although the Nerazzurri were eliminated 2-1 on aggregate, they were still the only side to beat Liverpool in the competition this season.

There was one other home stalemate in Europe, a 3-3 draw with Benfica in the quarter-final second leg after Liverpool had already won the first tie 3-1.

It also means that Conte has drawn four of his six career meetings with Klopp, winning 1-0 at Chelsea in May 2018 and suffering only one defeat, the very first Chelsea 1-2 Liverpool in September 2016.

  1. Klopp’s record against Serie A sides overall isn’t great. Certainly far worse than what it is against the cannon fodder that they hammer week-in, week-out in the epl.

The top 2 in England may be strong, but there’s no competition for them at all in recent years.

  2. its funny how we talk about English and Italian etc etc . When most of the players and coaching staff aren’t even that to begin with . The game is a global game – most can’t deal with it . The Italians had the serie A in late 80s and early 90s and bottled it . Now the EPL has the best league in the world – unless you live on another planet . So the hatred mostly comes from that . it’s ok for a yank to own a serie A team but not ok for one to own an EPL team . I’d concentrate on asking why – both England always is flops at the end of big tournaments , and Italy not even qualifying for the last 2 WC are disgraceful . And in world football they both are left behind .. reality – deal with it . .. and please change the headlines – a swallow doesn’t make a summer – Klopp has been smashing Italian teams over the last 10 years .. and you pick 2 games … better journalism needed here .. and FYI I have been a Lazio supporter for 40 off years now . So comment as a footballer …

  4. It’s so funny to see Italians trying to make positive news for Italy on results in another league. Where are the Italian teams in Europe? 12 years since you won something there. Not a single Italian on the pitch tonight in the match between Liverpool and Tottenham. No World cup again! No CL in 12 years. Take care of your problems. You can start with your rotting stadiums.

  5. Klopp is actually 0-2 strangely enough against the rise of slow ball, evolution 2.0 dinosaur Max.

  6. Carl don’t make me cry you are so right, I grew up and watched games with my dad with Baggio, he then told me about this lad named Del Piero that even rock bands in England Oasis loved the guy—the good old days when oh when can we bring them back again

  7. Ok I may have gone a little too far, but you seem obsessed with us and our league. I love your Calcio, but it’s unnecessary to always compare.

  8. @Albertini

Klopp has been smashing Italian teams for the lest 10 years? Really?

No, lol, his record against Italian teams (with 2 strong Dortmund and Liverool sides) is bang average at best.

    Played: 18
    Won: 8
    Drawn: 1
    Lost: 9

  9. The article just tell about how klopp struggle with Italian coach but the comment section taking it far away lmao. but the fact is klopp always struggle when it comes to italian coach, when he coaching dortmund or in liverpool.

  10. Misleading.

If we’re to compare Klopp stats against Italian tacticians, please do it right. Please show his records against Ancelotti, Sarri, Ranieri, Allegri, heck even Pioli too whom he beat twice this season. I actually don’t know how he fared against all these coaches. But to generalize that he struggled against Italian coaches when he just lost to Conte and Simone who happened to be Italian, would be too much of a stretch.

Actually I got curious and researched it myself:

    vs Ancelotti: 3-3-4
    vs Conte: 1-4-1
    vs Ranieri: 3-0-1
    vs Allegri: 0-0-2
    vs Simone: 1-0-1
    vs Pioli: 2-0-0
    vs Sarri: 1-1-1
    vs Prandelli: 2-0-0
    vs Mazzarri: 2-0-0
    vs Guidolin: 1-0-1
    vs Gasperini: 1-0-1
    vs Eusebio di Francesco: 1-0-1

@Lord Allegri: You are indeed PHD Max’s biggest fan, you know his stats by memory lol!
