Former referee and ex-UEFA chief Pierluigi Collina insists VAR must remain at the discretion of match officials and not Coaches.

There have been increasing calls for VAR to be reformed, with its application coming under fire in Serie A this season, but Collina made it clear football was a unique case compared to other sports.

“We can’t consider giving Coaches the chance to consult the VAR like in other sports,” he said from the Festival of Sport in Trento.

“We can’t consider giving Coaches the chance to consult the VAR like in other sports,” he said from the Festival of Sport in Trento.

“Unlike volleyball and basketball, where the vast majority of infractions are objective, in football there’s more interpretation by the referee.

“Once a pool of people analyses all the images available, this pool will have a better view of what happens on the field than a Coach.”
