Ashley Cole said his Roma side “can be proud of ourselves” after a 1-1 draw at Manchester City.

“I think it was a good performance from the boys going 1-0 down so early in the game, showing a lot of character, determination and belief in our team that we could get a result here,” he told ITV Sport.

“Maybe we could’ve won, you never know, but the boys can be proud of ourselves here because we played against champions and a great team.”

Manchester City improved after the break when they introduced Frank Lampard and James Milner.

“When you have people like Milner with his delivery and Lamps with his runs, the way he arrives and the way he can hit the ball, you always think they’re going to get a chance.

“We played well defensively and considering our goalkeeper hasn’t played that many games, maybe it was his third Champions League game, he did very well.”

Now Roma are solidly in second place with four points, behind Bayern Munich on six and ahead of Manchester City on one.

“It’s still early. We came here to win, are disappointed we didn’t get a win, but it was a good point for the team.”
