The Nerazzurri fought back for a dramatic late victory over Tottenham Hotspur, one of a run of four consecutive wins in all competition. Matteo Politano was chosen rather than Antonio Candreva, while Danilo D’Ambrosio shook off a knock to start. PSV had been only 1-0 down at Barcelona until the final 20 minutes, when they capitulated 4-0 to a Lionel Messi hat-trick.

The hosts wasted a huge chance in the opening minutes, as Luuk de Jong knocked down a cross at the far post only for Steven Bergwijn to balloon horribly over from close range.

Viergever stuck out an elbow to block Icardi running on to a through ball in a challenge at the very limits, but Samir Handanovic had a scare when only parrying Rosario’s long-range deflected snapshot and there was a scramble to get it clear.

Mauro Icardi tested Jeroen Zoet on a Radja Nainggolan cross, then set up Matias Vecino to fire over from close range in a very promising situation.

It proved costly, because moments later PSV took the lead with a ferocious Rosario right-foot strike into the top corner from 20 metres.

Inter fought back and Icardi’s header shaved a coat of paint off the far post, then another header on a corner was pushed off the line by Zoet.

The visitors were dominating possession and having more chances, but PSV were furious when Handanovic rushed off his line for a sliding tackle on Bergwijn, misjudged it and ended up handling. The goalkeeper was only shown a yellow card rather than a red, as they had drifted wide.

On the resulting free kick, Handanovic pushed a Hirving Lozano effort out from under the bar.

Inter did get their equaliser, as first Zoet got down to beat away a long-range Kwadwo Asamoah strike, then Icardi’s follow-up was charged down until eventually Nainggolan thumped in a half-volley from the edge of the box.

Straight after the restart, an awful clearance came to Gaston Pereiro, whose shot bounced off the upright with Handanovic rooted to the spot.

Instead, Inter turned it around completely when Icardi chested down a long ball, Zoet rushed out to collide with his own defender, leaving an empty net for Maurito to score.

Icardi almost had another, his header stinging Zoet’s gloves, but Handanovic needed a spectacular one-handed reaction save to keep out substitute Malen’s acrobatic bicycle-kick on 78 minutes.
